Contraindications
everything you need to know
A contraindication is a condition that means you may not be able to have your treatment or, I simply need to be aware in order to take the correct precautions. It's also important you are fully aware of how it may affect your treatment and any additional steps you may need to take so it's vital you are very honest when providing information in your consultation form.
See below the most common (but not conclusive) list of contraindications. If you think you may take a medication or have a condition that might affect treatment, please contact us or arrange a free consultation.
Accutane/Retinoids - Derivatives of vitamin A, Accutane and retinoids work by reducing the production of the skin’s natural oil (Sebum) in turn drying the skin out. The skin is therefore very thin, brittle, sensitive and has a higher chance of scarring You must wait until after the minimum one year before the procedure.
Acne - If acne is present in the area to be treated, treatment must be postponed until the skin is back to optimum health.
AHA/BHA Acids - If usual application is near the treatment area, the use of AHA/BHA acids should be discontinued a minimum of 48 hours - ideally 7 days - before treatment commences. Do not use these post treatments until the wound is completely healed.
Anti-inflammatory Medication - Do not take any in the 3 days leading up treatment
Autoimmune Disorders - An incredibly varied group of disorders. If the skin in the area is healthy and suitable for treatment a doctor's note / medical release is required.
Blood Thinners / Anti-Coagulants - EG: Warfarin, Eliquis and other blood thinning medications mean you cannot have any permanent makeup treatment.
Botox & Dermal Fillers - Both inhibits blood flow and nutrients in the area that has been injected. If you are treating an area where the client received Botox injections, such as the eyebrows for example, you should schedule treatment for when the majority of Botox has worn off or a minimum of 4 weeks post Botox if treatment is for symmetry. You cannot have botox until the brows have been touched up and are fully healed. Previous dermal fillers in a treatment area can trigger swelling and filler will dissolve at a quicker rate. Please wait 4 weeks before and after treatment for dermal fillers.
Cancer, Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy - You cannot proceed with treatment if you are currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy or have active skin cancer. These treatments massively compromise the client’s immune system, meaning the heightened risk of infection could put your health at serious risk. You must be 3 months clear of chemotherapy or Radiotherapy. In cases of terminal cancer, a doctor’s note is required.
Communicable Disease - HIV, AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB), Flu, Hepatitis, Measles, Chickenpox. If a client is suffering from only a curable infection, treatment can be booked for 6 weeks after recovery. If chronic / non curable or contractible the treatment cannot go ahead.
Diabetes - You may be allowed the treatment, but a consultation is required before hand to assess the skin in the treatment area. A doctors note/medical release is also required so please obtain this before booking a consultation.
Epilepsy / Seizures - If you have epilepsy, you have been ‘fit free’ for 2 years prior to treatment. A doctor's note is required and you must advise technicians on proper protocol to follow in the event that they suffer a seizure during appointment. You must also bring a friend/family member to the appointment who is also aware of seizure protocol.
Glaucoma (eyeliner only) - Because pressure is applied to the eye it can make things worse
Haemophilia - This impairs the body’s ability to form clots. You cannot have the treatment
Heart Disease / Stroke - This requires a consultation and will likely require a doctors note/medical release in writing before the procedure can go ahead. Please contact or arrange a consultation before booking your appointment.
High Blood Pressure / Hypertension - Blood pressure must be under control before commencing procedure. Blood pressure medication can make you bleed more, therefore leading to a longer healing time and potentially less retention. An additional touch up maybe required. This is at an additional cost.
Lash & Brow Growth Serum - These products enable a much higher blood flow the area which causes more bleeding, sensitivity, thin skin and a higher chance of pigment migration. You must discontinue use for 6 months
Liver Disease / Jaundice - You may not be able to process anesthetic or properly heal the wound associated with treatment. A Doctors Note / Medical Release required before commencing treatment.
Pigmentation - Both Hyperpigmentation and Hypopigmentation are more common in darker skin types, typically Fitzpatrick 4-6 (see below) and cannot have permanent makeup Clients who are known to suffer from hyper/hypo pigmentation must not be treated. If you are unsure, you will be required to sign an additional consent form confirming you will be entirely responsible for taking on the risk.
Pregnant /Breastfeeding - You must be 6 weeks post pregnancy and or 6 weeks after your baby has been weaned.
Scars - Hypertrophic / Keloid - You cannot have permanent makeup as it will likely cause a scar.
Normal scars - (providing small, thin and not excessively thick) are ok but you should be aware they are less likely to take pigment as well as surrounding areas and may require another touch up at your own expense.
Skin Disorders - Such as: Eczema, Rosacea, Psoriasis, dermatitis, keratosis pilaris - The skin in the area for treatment must not be comprised and MUST be at optimal health. Please contact me before booking in.
Steroids (cream, tablet, inhaler) - Topical steroid creams (directly on affected area) or Oral steroid medication should be treated as Retinoids. MUST BE 12 MONTHS CLEAR. If topical cream is applied away from the area or on a steroid based inhaler a doctor's note / medical release is required.
Surgery - If you have undergone surgery within the last 6 weeks you must wait until you are fully healed, discharged or received doctor’s approval before commencing with treatment.
Vitiligo - No new cases of vitiligo presenting on the body in 2 years
Warts - Warts are caused by a virus and are contagious. If you have a wart in the treatment area you must first consult a dermatologist or your doctor to arrange removal. Once removed you must wait a minimum of 6 weeks before treatment.
